Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy allows us to take moving real-time images of internal organs through the use of an x-ray image intensifier (fluoroscope). An x-ray image intensifier is a highly complex piece of equipment that allows low intensity x-rays to be amplified through the machine. By magnifying the intensity produced in the output image, it allows lower x-ray doses to be used on patients, enabling the radiologist to easily view the structure of the object being imaged.

We primarily utilize fluoroscopy for imaging the digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestines and colon. We perform fluoroscopy at our Massapequa, Plainview, Lindenhurst, West Islip and East Setauket locations.

Upper GI Tests (Gastrointestinal)

We use fluoroscopy to examine the esophagus, stomach, and the duodenum (first part of the small intestine). For the exam, the patient drinks barium, which coats the digestive tract and makes the images show up more clearly. The fluoroscope is held over the section of the body being studied, and the live video is shown on the monitor. We diagnose and study conditions such as ulcers, tumors, obstruction or narrowing of the GI tract, reflux symptoms and diarrhea.

Lower GI Test

Lower GIs or Barium Enemas are used to image the large intestines and rectum. Barium or an iodine-containing liquid is introduced gradually into the colon through a tube inserted into the rectum. Radiologists are able to detect and diagnose conditions such as colon polyps, tumors, diverticular disease and Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.
