Dr. Suzanne J. Smith Board Certified Radiologist Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology

Suzanne J. Smith, M.D., F.A.C.R. is a board certified radiologist since 1977 and specializes in Breast Imaging. She joined Zwanger-Pesiri in April of 2009.

Dr. Smith received her BA in Biology from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1966 and her MD from The Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1971. In 1972 she completed her internship at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio. At the Mayo Graduate School in Rochester, Minnesota, Dr. Smith completed both a residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1976 and a fellowship in Uroradiology and Body CT Scanning in 1977.

Dr. Smith brings a broad range of knowledge and experience to Zwanger-Pesiri. She was a radiologist at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1977 to 1983, serving as Director of the Department of Radiology from 1979 to 1981. After moving to New York in 1983, Dr. Smith worked as staff radiologist at New York University Hospital and Bellevue Hospital Center from 1983 to 1987. At St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center from 1987 to 1993, she was the Director of Mammography. From 1993 to 2007 she was the Director of Breast Imaging at New York Presbyterian Hospital, followed by working as an attending radiologist through February 2009.

As a leader and educator in the field of Breast Imaging, Dr. Smith has numerous academic appointments and teaching responsibilities. She has served as Instructor of Radiology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine; as Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, at New York University School of Medicine, and at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons; and as Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons since 1993. In 1989 she founded the New York Metropolitan Breast Imaging Society. She has given numerous presentations on breast imaging both locally and abroad.

Dr. Smith is both an author and coauthor of medical publications, including articles in the American Journal of Radiology, Archives of Internal medicine, and the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. She has contributed book chapters covering topics on image-guided localization for breast biopsy and benign and malignant diseases of the urinary tract.

Dr. Smith was an early investigator in digital mammography and participated in the ACRIN study comparing digital with film-screen mammography. She has served as a site inspector and reviewer for the mammography accreditation program of the American College of Radiology. She is currently a councilor to the American College of Radiology and in 2004 was awarded Fellowship in the College. Her main interests at present are screening mammography and defining standard of care.
